EDM Lesson 1: Mashup

As you have seen, I've posted some mashup tracks, but, for those who do not know, what exactly is a Mashup?

A mashup or bootleg (also mesh, mash up, mash-up, blend and bastard pop/rock) is a song or composition created by blending two or more pre-recorded songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the instrumental track of another.

When did it started?

The practice of assembling new songs from purloined elements of other tracks stretches back to the beginnings of recorded music. If one extends the definition beyond the realm of pop, precursors can be found in musique concrète, as well as the classical practice of (re-)arranging traditional folk material and the jazz tradition of reinterpreting standards. In addition, many elements of mashup culture have antecedents in hip hop and the DIY ethic of punk as well as overlap with the free culture movement.

Are there subgenres within the Mashup scene?

Eiffel 65 - I'm Blue (Decadon Remix)

Yes, I'm going dubstep today. :p

You'll probably remember the original version that rocked the radio stations in the early 2000s, I sure dance my ass off to this track. In fact, James Cameron got his idea for Avatar, because of this song. True story! :p

It feels good listen to this track many years later, remixed by Decadon. Fans of the original won't be disappointed.

For your listening pleasure.

Kill Paris - Shades of Funk

And now, for something a little different.

Shades of Funk, as the name implies incorporates elements of Funk music in an EDM track, that the result is better that expected. I didn't imagine that a merger between two distinguished styles (Funk and Dubstep), would produce such a great track.

AVICII at Nova Era Beach Party 2012 - Opening Track

This is the way a Live Set should be opened. Clash, a track by the up and coming, former Swedish House Mafia, Alesso (I've very high hopes for this guy), is a massive, a really MASSIVE track. It settled the mood for the rest of what was an extraordinary performance.

The video has some really bad quality, but I think you'll get the idea of what transpired Saturday night and what kind of show AVICII delivered.

Fedde le Grand & Nicky Romero ft. Matthew Koma - Sparks

'This is the time! This is the time to turn off your mind' :)

Follow the lyrics carefully, lay back and enjoy this awesome track!!

For your listening pleasure.

0SM & STwTS - House of the Rising Sun ft. Matthew Cassidy

I've mixed feelings about this one. This one is dubstep remix of a classic hit, House of the Rising Sun from The Animals (original here), and although I'm not that supportive of remixing the classics, because usually they end up killing the song, this remix is actually good. The vocals and the drops are well synchronized, so we get a good overall dubstep track.

Some remixes are good, others are plain bad, like any remix ever made of Smells Like Teen Spirit (just the best ever made), if a song is perfect don't mess with it!

For your listening pleasure.

EDM Flashback

'Just give it away..' :')

Feeling a bit nostalgic today? Nothing better, than remenber the older club hits. We go back to 2004 (wow 8 years ago, that's a lot of time :p), to listen to one of the biggest dance anthem that year: Give it away by Deepest Blue.

DJ Profile: BillyVan

Funny story about Billy. I was navigating in a very known bay, famous for its pirates, and I came across an instrumental EP of him as the top seeded link. Since I had nothing to lose I decided to take a look at it, and I didn't regret it. I was like:

Billy brings a new musicality to the saturated dubstep scene. When you think you've seen it all, it's pleasant surprise to hear something different, but inside the same genre of course. The trademark dubstep bass and wobbles are there, but Billy gives them his personal twist.

The EP features remixes from classic hits to current tracks, so there's something for everyone. Billy Van is a young producer from the Midwest (USA) trying to make a serious run at the EDM scene. Let's just wait to see how far will Billy go, he's on the right path, using the social networks to it's full potential, and making quality and entertaining music, so who knows. But enough with the talk, let's just listen to what he has to offer.

DJ Profile: Daft Punk

Daft Punk is an electronic music duo consisting of French musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. Daft Punk reached significant popularity in the late 1990s house movement in France and met with continued success in the years following, combining elements of house with synthpop.

The name 'Daft Punk' was inspired by a depreciative article published in a british magazine Melody Maker. The magazine had rated the first work of the duo, recorded in 1992 - at that time, the duo was called 'Darlin' - as a bunch of daft punk.

The debut recording of the duo as 'Daft Punk' was The New Wave, released by Soma Records in 1993. After this, followed their first commercial hit, the single Da Funk (1995). The debut album of the duo, Homework (1997) was considered an innovative mix of techno, house music, acid house and electro, and one of the most influent e-music albums of the '90s.

In September of 1999, they cease to exist, and become robots. 'No one really knows what happened', said Bangalter. 'I think there was a big explosion, and first thing we note is that we become robots. It was a good thing, given that allows us to do what we really love: perform in an anti-conventional way. We don't need to show our faces to be stamped in a magazine cover, or to sell a bunch of CDs.' The robot outfit are still used today in performances, therefore concealing their true identity. In interviews, the duo has been interviewed with a black bag in their head .
The album Discovery, from 2001, was more commercial, something that let some Homework fans down. Nevertheless, it succeeded in sales, and the One More Time track, released in 2000, reached the #2 position in the UK tops.

Porter Robinson - Language

Good weekend everybody, today I've for you another debut artist in the blog (the blog just started so there's going to be a lot of debuts :p). Is name is Porter Robinson, and I think you'll appreciate the artist as much as I do. For sure it won't be the last we've seen of Porter here on the blog.

DJ Week: Hardwell (Remix 3)

This remix ladies and gentleman is BRU-TAL. You may dislike the artist (Rihanna), but you have to admit that this remix is some ass-struting, tig ol' bitties shuffling, party-rocking track. I think that this one will steal the dance floors for sure.

For your listening pleasure.

DJ Week: Hardwell (Remix 2)

DJ Week: Hardwell (Original Mix 2)

Dropping sick mixes today. Zero 76 is the result of a colaboration between Hardwell with the world renowned Dj Tiesto, and the final result is nothing but awesome. Hope that these two find the time to do something similar in the future.

The Great EDM War has Begun

Interesting article about the business side of EDM from EDMsnob:

"Letting the corporate world into EDM is like letting a thief take your house and then sell it back to you brick by brick. There, I said it.
By now, it’s no secret. The world of corporate music and concerts wants your house.
…And your trance, your dubstep, your electro, and your drum and bass, too. They want whatever you want, so that they can sell it back to you note-by-note and wobble-by-wobble.
Since our original expose about Insomniac’s Electric Daisy Carnival, I’ve spoken to a lot of people in the industry, and many others in the live EDM business have spoken out on their own publicly. Let’s recap on what I’ve learned.
There are two big factions in the live EDM business, and both of them are in a gold rush to acquire independent promoters and become bigger and more powerful than the other one.
The first is Live Nation Entertainment, which you may know as Ticketmaster, the service-charging powerhouse of the ticketing world. In the last year, they’ve acquired Creamfields and Hard Events, bringing on the respective leaders of those companies and building strategies to further increase their influence.
The second entity is what will eventually be known as SFX Entertainment, which includes Disco Donnie Presents. Originally I thought that this company had spun off from Insomniac’s touring events division entirely. What I now know is that Disco Donnie took back the approximately 20 local affiliate companies that he delivered to Insomniac around 2010, and sold that whole entity to Robert Sillerman and SFX Entertainment. Insomniac and Disco Donnie Presents are still partners on the massives (including Electric Daisy Carnival), so we’ll lump these companies together.

DJ Week 1: Hardwell (Updated with all this weeks posts)

Every now and then I will bring to you DJ themed weeks. Basically I'll start it with a DJ profile and in the following days of the week I'll present to you some of my favourite mixes, live sets, news from that DJ.

So to start let me give to you, the award-winning DJ, producer, label manager, music lover, DJMag Top 100 list newcomer and barely 23 years old… Here is: Hardwell!

This talented genius, better known as Robbert van de Corput started his DJ career at the age of 13. After this blow-out Hardwell’s talent was picked up by a Dutch label and they signed him when he was only 14 years old! Shortly after his label signing he started to play at all mayor clubs in the Netherlands.

For the last couple of years, Hardwell has been recognised by the industry as having a new and refreshing take on a scene that continues to evolve and seems to have an everlasting shelf life. He has created his unique trademark as a DJ and producer around this sound.

His growing reputation and success was picked up by party-minded people, they voted for him for the DJMAG Top 100 this year and he got a well deserved #24 spot in the Top 100 list, his first entry into their charts.

Hardwell has already showcased his remix skills for top DJs such as Fedde Le Grand, Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, Bob Sinclar, Chris Lake, Funkerman, Laidback Luke, Sharam (Deep Dish), Steve Angello, Booty Luv, Flo Rida ft. Akon, Martin Solveig, Dada Life, Alex Gaudino ft. Kelly Rowland, Gareth Emery and Hi_Tack.

Behind the decks Hardwell never fails to deliver. His exceptional technical skills, variety of music, distinguished looks and that added personal touch make him stand out.

He's clearly the new kid on the block, and he's here to say.

And now, for your listening pleasure.

DJ Mag Top 100 DJs 2012: Polls Open

And the polls are officially open!! From now until August 29th 2012 you can log in to the Top 100 poll (http://apps.facebook.com/topdjsvote) on Facebook and vote for up to 5 DJs in order of preference. As always, it's a diffcult task to name only 5 since there're so many good dj's and producers out there we're to bound to leave someone good out of our top 5. But hey, that's a good thing, it's a sign that electronic music is being delivered in quality and quantity and we can't ever have enough of that.

DJ's Mag Top 100 is the official ranking of DJ's, or, as Armin Van Buuren called it "the Oscars for dance music". Who's gonna top this year list? Will David Guetta retain is #1 spot, or, will we have a new #1? I guess it all depends on you, and on your vote.

GRANADA!!

OMG!! was exactly my reaction when I first heard this tune. OMG and ShockWave are 2 up and coming Dubstep/Electronic music producers from Dallas, Texas in The United States, and are fairly new to the music scene. Since starting to build a fan-base in November 2011, they have received masses of great feedback, what is well deserved given the great dubstep remix of Eliminate's - Chasing Fire, for example. Explosive tune, with one of the most sickest drops I've heard in a while.
